Four scores and seven years ago, one of the most buzzed about and coveted foundations of 2018 was released. The NYX Can’t Stop Won’t Stop {Can't stop, won't stop, Rocafella records'cause we, we get down baby, we get down baby} foundation in collaboration with Youtube sensation Alissa Ashley was officially launched and the beauty community was salivating at the lips in sheer anticipation.
Like many beauty lovers and fans of Alissa Ashley, I sat eagerly anticipating the product release in hopes of snagging my own bottle of the seemingly magic potion. And luckily, I was able to snag my own bottle right off the NYX website. If you follow me on instagram then you’d already seen my wear test and have a little bit of an idea of what I’m planning to say. But I thought I’d use this space to sum it all up and bring my thoughts together in one swoop.
Yes I know I am literally ages behind and late for the review party. Almost still in the prehistoric period behind actually. And the buzz around this product has most definitely died down by now. Replaced by beauty community drama, new romances, yuletide wishes, holiday movies, ugly sweaters and ooh Cardi B just dropped her new money video and she’s back with Offset?! (Hold on just a moment, I’ll be right back).
Now where were we? Yes. I am undoubtedly waaaaaaaaaaaay late with this review. But…. I spent my moolah; I have an opinion and I still want to share it with you. So…. Have a seat please. Grab a snack. Buckle up. And let’s get ready to ruuuuuuuuuumble. It’s time for another foundation review.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Available in a whopping 45 shades and tones (from pale to deep ebony); the product is described as being lightweight, waterproof and highly pigmented foundation that doesn’t transfer. NYX promises that each shade glides on smoothly to give a matte and full coverage for up to 24 hours. It also promises to control shine and mattify your complexion all day long. Best yet, it’s noncomedogenic and suitable for normal, oily, combination and sensitive skin types. And all this for a price point of $15 USD for 1 ounce of product. Can you say score?!
HOW I FOUND MY SHADE:
Welcome to the land of guesstimation. As far as I know, there’s no store in Jamaica that currently carries the foundation. So because I’m fancy and want foreign things, I had the daunting task of ordering the foundation online and navigating through the land of dark skinned beauties to find the illustrious shade promise land. The NYX online shade match process begins by asking you a few questions like the type of preferred formula, coverage and finish; asking your undertones and finally your skin tone. They also have a shade chart that you can use to match the foundation. Then I’m left to my own devices to see which picture I match up with. I honestly hate picking from a picture because lighting and perception is everything. Seriously! Anyhow, I ended settling on Warm Mahogany which is described as a medium deep with golden warm undertones. Did I make the right choice? Let’s see shall we…
THE PACKAGING:
Simple seems to be the theme of the year as like with my Colourpop No Filter and Black Radiance foundations, the packaging for the NyX Can’t Stop Won’t Stop foundation was very simple chic. The foundation comes in a glass bottle with a black pump and a clear lid to cover. The shade name is on the lid and on the label affixed to the side of the bottle in black and white writing. If you’re familiar with my foundation reviews then you already know how I am about glass. These foundations really trying to put old butterfingers Nella to the test huh?
APPLICATION:
Now this is what I call a full coverage foundation!!!
The consistency of the NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop Foundation is pretty thin, however, I didn’t find it too runny. The coverage is almost a full coverage with just one pump, but with two pumps the deal is sealed and it is definitely a full coverage foundation. Even my more stubborn acne/hyperpigmentation scars went scattering and fleeing on application. I barely needed to use any concealer. And as advertised, the finish is matte but not crusty cake faced matte. I hear even dry skin gals can take a crack at it. Just note that it dries quickly so blend blend blend like your life depends on it. The bottle recommends shaking well before applying the foundation. I didn’t do that but you probably should, it may just work even better.
MY REVIEW:
This was probably one of my favourite foundations of 2018. First of all, it lasted. I mean it truly lasted for a good while. I wore the foundation for 12 hours and I was a matte maven for majority of the day. Now I can’t confirm the 24 hours claim because I am not going to wear any foundation for that long. But I can say it lasts for at least 12 hours.
Plus it is waterproof. It just so happened that on the day I wore this foundation, it rained. So considering the good Lord was giving me a hand with my wear test; I walked through the rain and my foundation didn’t run.
It also felt really great on the skin. It wasn’t heavy or cakey and my skin felt like it could breath; while still keeping me shine free. Tata Moonie, I think you’ve met your match.
The only drawbacks were that it didn’t look as seamless as other foundations. Well at least to me. I could see clearly that I was wearing makeup, whereas with other foundations like the Colourpop and Black Radiance, it looked more like a natural finish. It didn’t look like it melted into my skin as intricately as I’m used to. Despite what may be a somewhat pet peeve, I think the foundation actually looked pretty good on my skin. Was it my perfect shade? I don’t think so. But it was a shade that I looked good in, could wear for extended periods and not look crazy.
It is not transfer-proof. Oh how I wish it were so but sadly, the NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop Foundation does transfer to other surfaces. I noticed it most when I used my phone and the foundation transferred to my screen.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
Overall, I really liked this foundation. Excellent coverage and great staying power. I absolutely loved the matte finish and it felt really lightweight on the skin. Added bonus : My shiny bright diamond face actually kept at bay for a decent amount of time. It has a wonderful and wide shade range so you’re very likely to find a match or near match. And it’s very affordable too. Talk about value for money. I recommend this foundation to beauty and makeup lovers far and wide; and to newbie makeup adventurists looking to start off and experiment with foundation.
